This film has such a great story line, with an unsuspecting series of events and a moving, unpredictable ending. Although the film was great, it left you feeling "creeped out" by the story and dastardly deeds of the twisted, lunatic of a murderer.

Will certainly be getting this on dvd :)

The Ward film Response

Directed by the legend that is John Carpenter, this film was actually quite a shocker, I wasn't expecting it to be so good. It's a horror/thriller about a young woman who is admitted to a psychiatric ward after she burnt down an abandoned farmhouse. She quickly learns to dislike her new "home" with care from brutal orderly's and an unwanted visitor in her cell at night.

As the story unfolds she becomes more aware of this "visitor" and wonders why the other women can't see her. With an awesome twist ending, this film is one of the best I've seen all year :D

Twilight - Breaking Dawn film response!

I went to see the new Twilight film at the cinema last night, it was just amazing :D The atmosphere from the rest of the audience was just incredible, laughing, cheering, crying :')

Definatly recommend this film, better than all the other Twilight films :D

Crash *****

I watched the film and it is one of the best movies i've ever seen. The film focuses on several characters, each of their stories different, however, their lives intertwine in many ways, over a period of two days. With an all star cast featuring Sandra Bullock, Sean Cooper, Don Cheadle and Matt Dillon.
Definitely be watching it again.

Awesome Scene - Crash (2005)

I came across this clip whilst browsing "memorable scenes" from films on Youtube. The film is called Crash, i've never actually seen it but in the process of downloading it :)

From what i've gathered from the comments, the guy with the gun had his shop broken into and blames the other guy. The little girl, earlier in the film was given a "magical, invisible, invincible cloak" by her dad, to protect her and stop getting scared. The scene shows the shop owner going to the dad's house to kill him.

Chosen Scene :)

 This is one of the most memorable scenes from the film but also one of the most disturbing, so watch at your own risk.

Chosen Film :)

For my Film Studies course we have been asked to choose a film, which we then have to write an essay on, describing and explaining to micro elements with-in a particular scene from the film. I Have chosen to base my Micro Elements on Mise-en-scene and Cinematography.

The film I have chosen to base my work on is Miracle at St Anna, a film directed by Spike Lee. It is the true story focusing on the amazingly brave Buffalo Soldiers of the 92nd infantry division which consisted of 15,000 American soldiers, whom served their country in Italy, during the Second World War.

The story follows the journey of 4 Buffalo soldiers, Sergeant Aubrey Stamps, Sergeant Bishop Cummings, Corporal Hector Negron and Private Sam Train. They are unexpectedly caught behind enemy lines and seperated from their unit. They seek help and refuge from local villagers, who form an allegiance to help stand up against the deadly, terrifying, oncoming Nazi attack.

An all-star cast including, Joseph Gordan-Levitt (Inception), John Turturro and Kerry Washington.
Miracle at St Anna is a tale of utter Heroism, drama, humor and action.

Goodfellas - Cinematography

Whilst watching Goodfellas, we were asked to take notes on several cinematography techniques within the film. This included camera shots, camera movement, camera angles, focusing and framing.
Here are the notes i took whilst watching the film..

The film starts with a scene where a speeding car is being tracked by the camera along a dark road. It's night and the main features of the car are the head lights. This imeadiately grabs the audience's attention as their eyes are forced to focus on the moving car.

The scene is then cut to the inside of the car, showing 3 men, 2 seem to be asleep. The driver, Henry, is shown using a close up shot, it reveals that he looks exhausted as he rubs his eyes. He looks like he is about to fall asleep. 

Henry stops the car after he thinks he's "hit something". A long shot is used to show the three guys walk to the back of the car. The camera then moves to a close up of the boot of the car, this allows the audience to understand that the noise is in fact coming from the boot.

                                             

  A pan shot is then used to show the three men who have surrounded the boot of the car. All of whom seem to be holding different objects.

Starting with Jimmy who is holding what looks like a baseball bat, then to Tommy who pulls out a knife from his jacket, ending finally with Henry, who is keeping hold of the car keys.








The techniques used in just the first 1/2 minutes have already done their job at drawing in the audience. The close up of the car, the close up of Henry and the pan of the 3 men, have left the viewers guessing and wanting more.

Here are some examples of other cinematography techniques used throughout the film.

Extreme Close-up
These shots are usually used to show a particular object up close or a part of the face. This technique can be seen when young Henry is shown looking out of his window at the "gangsters". This allows the audience to observe and interpret his expression, from what is seen it looks plain and blank, yet you can see the longingness in his eyes, his hunger to be with the "gangsters"

Medium Shot - Low Angle Shot
A scene near the beginning of the film shows Henry's father talking down to him. The use of the low angled camera, captures and portrays this as his father looks taller, powerful and exceedingly stronger compared to Henry. It captures his expression of anger and disappointment as he learns his son has been skipping school to help run a taxi company.

Long Shot
The explosion in the screen shot below shows Henry, a mere silohuete compared to the bright flames, burning behind him, he has just blown up Paulie's taxi company, at Paulie's request. Whilst the screen shows the build up of events, a voice over is heard, it is the voice of the older Henry, narrating the film. As the explosion occurs, the camera is frozen, showing Henry running and the flames building up. All that is heard is Henry's voice.

Henry states; "One day, some kids from the neighbourhood carried my mothers groceries all the way home, you know why? it was out of respect"
This shows that not only is Henry fearless, running from a huge explosion, but he is also extremely well respected in the community he lives in.

Steady Camera Shot
A scene later on in the movie shows Henry taking his new girl Karen to the Copacabana. During the whole build up of entering the club, they are both followed by the camera man, starting in the street, through the short-cut entrance, through the kitchen straight into the main club.

As they move deeper into the club, you can see that Henry has many connections and is well respected by people, and also has a high status in the area.

Paranormal Activity 3

I recently went to see Paranormal Activity 3, being third in the series i was looking forward to seeing if it was better or worse than the first two. It was satisfyingly awesome :) It is way better than the first two as it contains more jumpy scenes and combines/intertwines the first 2 films together. With additions of humor and utter terror, i can't wait to get it on DVD :D

Goodfellas Film Response

We recently watched the film "Goodfellas" directed by Martin Scorcese. I really enjoyed watching Goodfellas, it was an interesting film and it was good to see Robert De Niro play up to his role of the "bad guy" Although the film was good, great casting, great acting, i was a little disappointed by the ending, i thought that Henry would have had some kind of shoot off or fight with De Niro's character Jimmy, instead he went into hiding. Apart from the ending, it was overall a really good film, and i'd be willing to watch it again :)

Thelma & Louise

1991 film Thelma & Louise, directed by Ridley Scott. I really enjoyed watching this film, it was funny, interesting and moving. The story line had really good twists, you could never guess what would happen next. The casting for the roles was perfect, I can't pick a favourite as they were both so good. It is a film I would definitely watch again.

Brighton Rock - 2011 - Film Response

After watching the most recent version of the film, I think the second one is better. Although the  scenes varied and were not in order to the original film, the dialog in most scenes was the same. Scenes such as the Pinky's death and the recording of his voice, contain pretty much the same dialog as the first film.

One thing i did like about the old film was the way it kept you guessing, little cliffhangers now and then. The second film had these, but weren't as dramatic.

Brighton Rock - Lighting and Meaning

We recently watched John Boulting's 1947 classic, Brighton Rock. A story of gang violence, one of the gangs being led by the young, cunning Pinkie Brown. He commits murder at a fair ground and does his best to cover it up, doing whatever it takes, even forcing a young, naive woman into holding evidence.

One aspect of the film we were focusing on was the use of lighting. Lighting can portray power and vulnerability, sincerity and happiness. Characters within the film had different kinds of light shone upon them, for example, Pinky, the main bad guy in the film, regularly had low key lighting. This outlined not only his importance, but his darker, far more evil side, as if he is looming in the shadows. This is very much the case when we first see Pinky, he is lounging on his bed with what seems to be a piece of string, during this scene, the other characters have a mid/bright tone portraying their "innocence". It's almost as if he's scanning his brain, the low key lighting adds to his zone of thinking.

Rose's lighting is completely opposite from Pinky's, in pretty much all of her scenes high key light is used. This technique shows she is a friendly, bright and happy person. This remains throughout the whole film until near the end, the scene where she is on the pier uses a fairly darker tone, however, still lighter light compared to Pinky. 

Hard light and soft light has also been used to strengthen the display of each individual characters within the film.

Brighton Rock - 1947 - Film Response

I enjoyed the film, it had a really good story line, kept you guessing what would happen next. My favourite character was Ida, she was funny and basically bonkers, but she didn't give up on helping Rose. I didn't like the music much in it, it was a bit dramatic for particular scenes. Other than that it was a good film. I am downloading the modern version to see which one is better :)

My Favourite Black & White Film

To Kill A Mocking Bird, released in 1962, an adaptation of Harper Lee's novel - To Kill A Mocking Bird, tells the story of Atticus Finch. He is a lawyer during the Depression Era. Atticus is set to defend an innocent black man charged of rape, Tom Robinson. His children are narrators as well as key characters throughout the story, Jem and Scout.

Set in the fictional town of Maycomb, this is such an amazing, powerful film about prejudice and the views of the world from the eyes of innocent children.
